A 2020 Christmas carol

The news recently feels rather relentlessly gloomy. I find genuine comfort in the blanketing dark of these midwinter nights, but last night as I looked out of the black window, I sensed a collective sadness that was impossible to overlook. This was my response. I don’t normally write in rhyme, as I often feel it seems too contrived, but this is how it came out; perhaps to lighten the weight of the subject matter and feeling. It finishes with hope. Always hope.

All is not calm

All is not bright

It feels unlike peace in our world tonight

With lorries stranded at clogged up ports

And people who cannot be where they ought

There are shops that can’t open

Businesses shut

People bereft of jobs that were cut

I look to the night and imagine the faces

Of people abandoned in lonely places

I feel the world shedding a communal tear

And I long to embrace it and push away fear

Alone in our homes we can reach for each other

From this desolate season spark hope to recover

Find a star we can follow and seek out some joy

Like the wise men were led to the sweet baby boy

I sit by my tree with its twinkling lights

And I send out a plea to this sodden still night

That wherever you be and whatever your pain

You’ll have courage and kindness and hope once again

Let there be calm

Bring in the bright

I wish for you heavenly peace tonight.
