Leaving the shopping mall,
Bags and feet groaning with festive excess
I watch two gulls passing silent beneath the clouds
And envy their lightness.
I have been diving for pearls,
Among the shift and wash of Christmas shoppers,
The treasures I found there
Thumping heavily against my aching legs
But I sense some seeping seasonal satisfaction
Though these bags are weighty with mere things,
They are also laden with the promise
Of your delight.
