The beginning..

In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic and as a casualty of lock down, I was made redundant.

Instead of embarking on my fledgling career in medical research and being Important and Clever, I was abruptly left staring into the void of unemployment and failure. I braced myself for the wave of anxiety and boredom and plain old self pity to knock me under and urge me back into the workplace. To clamber back aboard the treadmill I had been gripping onto for years.

But instead I began to notice a new and gentle acquaintance with someone who had been dolefully whispering at my heart for years. Someone who had been buried under efforts to be a person she wasn’t; to live as others live – quickly, loudly and efficiently. Someone who feels loudly but lives quietly, whose emotions are ebullient but who lives slowly. Someone whose idea of a successful life didn’t match up to the one presented to her by the world and held as truth.

That someone was myself. The one who began to breathe and notice and live, slowly and surely, the life I was supposed to live and not the one dolled out by media and expectation.

This is my blog. In it I promise never to give you things to do, but to simply invite you to enjoy the moments I savour in this ordinary life. I write in the hope that as you go about your own beautiful and precious day, you too will notice the shimmering treasure of tiny moments punctuating the everyday tasks you undertake. Notice, savour, and in the gentleness of the commonplace and ordinary, be glad.
